DISCUSSION: Primary purpose questions are similar to main point questions. You have to figure out why the author is giving us this information.
Here, the purpose of the passage is to describe Whatley’s plan for small farms.

- CORRECT. This sounds pretty good. Mechanization and debt are serious problems for small farms, according to the first paragraph.The final paragraph shows that Whatley’s proposals are innovative. He proposes having consumers come to farms. The traditional view is that farmers use roads to sell in town. (second sentence of paragraph 4).
- The passage only mentions one contemporary trend: the trend towards mechanization and debt. The author mentions some downsides, but doesn’t discuss upsides.
- Not quite. The passage does criticize mechanization and debt. But mainly the passage focusses on offering a solution, not a critique.
