DISCUSSION: The second paragraph argues that computer conferences are communities. The author is being fair and presenting the opposing argument. This allows the author to make a stronger counterargument in the third paragraph.
___________
- The second paragraph doesn’t say anything about the origins of computer conferences. Don’t pick nonsense answers.
- The advocates in the first paragraph said that conferences are communities. It’s on line 15. Don’t pick this type of answer without double-checking what the advocates say.
- CORRECT. The second paragraph gives us the reasons the conference advocates think that conferences are communities. The author then argues against this view in the third paragraph.
- Nope. If this were true, the argument would have this structure: claim, objection, counterpoint (supporting claim). But the actual structure goes like this: claim, support for claim, counterargument to the claim.
- Not at all. The third paragraph said conferences aren’t communities, so the second paragraph did a poor job of anticipating what would be said.
