DISCUSSION: The author’s goal is probably to persuade medical schools to use narrative literature to train medical students.
___________
- Close, but first the author would have to convince medical schools that they should use narratives.
- Lines 17-19 say that current ethics classes are useful. So they aren’t counterproductive.
- The author wasn’t talking about all narrative literature. That’s incredibly broad (it includes all novels, for instance). The article is recommending we use ethical stories written to train medical students. That’s a tiny subset of all narrative literature. Also, lines 55-57 say that narrative literature doesn’t have to lead to situational ethics.
- CORRECT. The first paragraph says that doctors risk ignoring their patients instead of empathizing with them. The author thinks that narrative literature will keep doctors in tune with their fellow humans.
- The author hasn’t said what the value will be. They haven’t said what harm will come from doctors who aren’t empathetic, and they don’t say what the benefits of empathetic doctors are.
