QUESTION TEXT: Which one of the following most accurately…
DISCUSSION: When you read a passage, you should always ask: “Why is the author telling me this?” That will help you filter out wrong answers. E is pretty obviously the main point if you had a good understanding of the passage and thought about why the author wrote what they wrote.
The wrong answers are typically either wrong or minor details. A and B are just random facts from the passage. They aren’t the main point. C and D are actually false.
___________
- This is just a random fact from the passage. The overall point is that Zanotto’s research supports the original understanding that glass doesn’t flow down much at all at low temperatures.
- This is just a fact from the fourth paragraph. It explains why old windows have thicker bottoms. It was manufacturing techniques, not flow rates.
- Nonsense. Lines 39-43 show that Zanotto is confirming earlier studies. There were no “years of investigations” into glass flow, or “a common misunderstanding” about glass.
Lines 1-4 show that ordinary people have a myth about glass, but glass researchers haven’t been confused. - This answer is false! Lines 31-34 show that it would take trillions of years for glass to sag. Glass motion is not “one of several factors” that’s contributed to thick glass bottoms.
- CORRECT. This covers everything. Paragraph 1 discusses the common belief. Paragraphs 2 and 3 show the study that debunks the belief. The final paragraph shows the real reason.
This answer focusses mainly on the final paragraph, but it does cover everything.
