DISCUSSION: The first paragraph tells us about Williams’ view. He though economic reasons led to the abolition of slavery.
Slave labor was inefficient, and the slave colonies had poor soil and much debt (lines 5-9).
The wrong answers describe the opinions of Drescher and Eltis. This question is easy if you just reread the first paragraph and remind yourself what Williams said.
___________
- Drescher thinks that populism explains abolition.
- Again, Drescher thinks it was popular and aristocratic pressure that ended slavery.
- This sounds like something Eltis might say. He was the one who focussed on the wants of consumers.
- CORRECT. The first paragraph proves this.
- Lines 37-39 show that Eltis thought that capitalists used slavery to keep wages down. We have no idea whether workers ever figured this out and therefore opposed slavery.
