DISCUSSION: The main point is that women had power in medieval England. This shows that medieval law could not be neatly divided between public and private.
___________
- The passage never said that some women could gain official public office. The author only pointed out that some women wielded influence thanks to their wealth and landholdings.
- This isn’t even true. A dower and a jointure
(line 39) could be even more important than an inheritance, if the inheritance was small. - CORRECT. This covers all paragraphs. Widows couldn’t hold official office, but some had influence because they were wealthy landowners.
- The passage only talks about the thirteenth century. Women may have had more influence in earlier centuries (perhaps in Roman times?).
- This doesn’t say why it was important that women could own land. The passage points out that these women wielded influence because of their wealth.
