DISCUSSION: We know very little about the relationship between Locke and Porter. The two men may hardly have known each other, even though they worked at the same school.

The author mentioned Locke’s book to show that Porter’s only predecessor had missed the point.

1. The author says Locke and Porter taught at the same school, but we don’t know whether Porter’s work depended on Locke’s.
2. CORRECT. See lines 31-34. Porter’s book addressed a crucial issue that Locke had ignored.
3. Err…the passage never says that Porter is unknown. Maybe he’s famous in the artistic community.
4. Lines 1-3 contradict this. Porter was the first to notice.
5. We’re never told why Porter published a book.
