DISCUSSION: The theoretical approach is described on lines 23-27. It argued that separate but equal contradicted itself, and so was illegal.

1. The first, non-theoretical approach was to point out inequality. The second approach argued that separate could not mean equal, by definition.
2. CORRECT. See lines 26-27. These questions often simply repeat a line from the passage. 
3. This was Marshall’s approach. His short term strategy was to argue that there were unequal facilities. His long term approach was the theoretical approach.
4. This isn’t mentioned. And a theoretical approach shouldn’t depend on individual cases in the real world. A theoretical argument uses logic and principle to show that something is wrong.
5. This was the non-theoretical strategy mentioned in lines 19-24.
