This guide is written by Steve Schwartz of LSAT Blog. I learned a lot from reading this guide, especially about timelines for applications. It’s the best concise overview of the law school admissions process I’ve found. This book is a guide to the admissions process, a schedule, and a checklist.
I’ve read some of the top selling admissions books. They’re accurate, and informative, but long. Very long. The page-counts of the top three guides on amazon are 224, 314 and 624(!) pages respectively. This guide is different. It’s short and concise – on purpose. It tells you everything you need to know in a compact format that lets you hold the entire admissions process in your head.
This book covers:
- Small details like how to clean up your online profile for when admissions officers Google/Facebook you (they do!)
- How to write a great personal statement
- When to take the LSAT
- Using the LSAC credential assembly service
- When and how to write optional essays, diversity statements and addenda
- Getting your FAFSA paperwork in order so you can receive financial aid
- The best times to do all of the above, with a month by month schedule
The guide is full of links to posts on LSAT Blog. So where you need more detail, it’s there. But the guide itself isn’t cluttered up with information that may not be relevant to you. Instead it’s full of the important, basic things that everyone needs to get right – with links to extra info when you need it. This guide will help you actually write a good application by providing the necessary info and then getting out of the way.
If you’re looking for an exhaustive, 300 page overview of the entire admissions process in one book, then please don’t buy this. But if you want a clear, practical that gives you exactly what you need to make your application, then you won’t go wrong with this guide.

Graeme’s note: This guide is written by Steve Schwartz, of LSAT Blog, not me. I’ve been a fan of Steve’s site for yours: his articles have been my go to source for learning about the American law school admission process. Not only is this guide an excellent overview of the process, but it’s full of links to articles Steve has written about specific parts of the admissions process. This guide is the easiest way to find all of the LSAT Blog articles relevant to writing your application.
