QUESTION TEXT: With which one of the following statements…
DISCUSSION: The right answer to this sort of question will be directly in the passage. Many wrong answers will feel tempting because they are familiar, but familiar doesn’t equal correct.
To prove your answer right, you should practice quickly locating supporting information in the passage. If you actually drill this, and know the passage, then it shouldn’t take longer than five seconds.
___________
- The author disagrees with this, see lines 37-40: even in the past, some researchers took measures to prevent competitors from using their discoveries.
- When you read a passage, you should form an idea of the author’s opinions and use that to eliminate answers. The author likes patents. So they wouldn’t agree with an answer like this.
The author never directly said if they thought fees would be excessive. But the gist of paragraph three is that basic researchers won’t have to worry about using patented materials, so it’s implied that fees won’t be an issue. - CORRECT. See lines 48-51. Patent litigation is expensive, and so companies are unlikely to use it against basic researchers.
- The author said nothing about what kinds of funding researchers should accept. There is zero support for this answer.
This answer was written to confuse you if you remembered that research funding was mentioned in lines 4-7, but didn’t remember whether the author gave an opinion. - This is just silly. The author spent the entire second paragraph listing the reasons that some researchers oppose patents, and this wasn’t in there.
The author is generally sympathetic to the scientists who disagree with patents. The author thinks they’re wrong, but she nonetheless takes the scientists’ opinions seriously. So it would be strange to insult the scientists as being bad scientists who can’t patent their work.
