1. Nerve cells depend on chemicals called neurotrophic factors to survive and function. Levi-Montalcini discovered the first of these, nerve growth factor (NGF), in the 1950s, which earned her a Nobel Prize.
2. She discovered NGF while studying why some developing nerve cells die while others survive. She found that mouse tumors could stimulate nerve growth in chick embryos, leading her to identify a protein produced by the tumors that caused this effect. She named this protein nerve growth factor.
3. NGF was the first discovered cell-growth factor and was later found to exist throughout the body. It helps developing nerve cells connect with the correct target cells and later keeps those nerve cells alive. Without NGF, certain nerve cells die.
