1. Historians have tried to identify the tribal origins of African sculptures by studying artistic style. However, this approach may be too simple because styles do not always belong to only one tribe.
2. African art styles often spread through trade and artists who create work for multiple groups. Because artists adapt their work for different tribes, it can be difficult to identify an artwork’s origin based only on style.
3. The Konaté family in Burkina Faso shows how one group of artists can produce sculptures for many different ethnic groups. They know the differences between styles, but their own techniques and artistic features remain mostly the same.
4. African art historians should recognize that artists often create work across ethnic boundaries. Small differences in style are not enough to determine which group produced a particular artwork.
