PASSAGE TEXT: The Internet is a system of computer networks that allows individuals and organizations …

Paragraph Summaries

  1. The Internet allows people and organizations around the world to share information across borders. This makes traditional laws and enforcement methods harder to apply.
  2. Governments rely on control over territory to enforce laws, but they cannot easily control Internet activity crossing borders. Blocking certain information would require extreme measures like banning Internet access, which most people would be against.
  3. The Internet creates problems for trademark law because businesses can display names worldwide. It is unclear which country should control trademark disputes when online content can be accessed everywhere.
  4. The Internet creates new legal issues, such as privacy concerns, that existing laws do not handle well. Cross-border communication makes it difficult to decide which country’s rules should apply.
