Preptest 151 Data

Preptest 151 is a new format LSAT Preptest with no logic games section. Its sections come from Preptest 85 (Sections 1, 2 and 3) and Preptest 81 (Section 4). These preptests were administered in September 2018 and June 2017 originally. Section IV is the experimental section, which does not count towards your score. It is included in order to let you simulate a four question practice test – the questions themselves are no different in style than the scored sections.

Hi, I understand the explanations for the first 3 sections aren’t up yet. But if someone could help clarify question 17 on section 3, it would be a big help! The correct answer choice says that some fish in traditional hatcheries die because they are too timid in foraging for food. I don’t understand how it is a necessary assumption. The argument says that fish from experimental hatcheries are more likely to survive in the wild because they are bolder in exploring new environments and trying new food. Couldn’t that still be the case even if the traditional hatchery fish’s timidness didn’t cause them to die? Why do the fish need to be below a baseline amount of timidity (as indicated by the phrasing, “too timid”) to validate the bold fish’s increased likelihood of survival?

Hi! Here’s a breakdown of the argument.

The conclusion says fish raised in experimental hatcheries are more likely to survive after release.

That’s because (i.e. the reasoning is) those fish are bolder in exploring new environments and trying new types of food.

Notice the switch from the reasoning to the conclusion. The argument moves from a behavioral difference to a survival conclusion:

      1. Fish from experimental hatcheries are bolder.
      2. So, they are more likely to survive.

But we don’t have anything linking boldness to survival. Why should boldness increase survival? The argument’s assuming that this greater willingness to explore and try food is a trait that actually helps fish survive in the wild. Otherwise, we’d have no basis to conclude that these fish are more likely to survive.

Answer C tells us that timidity in foraging for food can cause death. If this is true, then greater boldness can plausibly improve survival.

Imagine the negation of C: fish DON’T die from being too timid in foraging for food. If that’s true, then the whole argument falls apart. Then we have no plausible basis to conclude that boldness in foraging for food increases chances of survival.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have further questions or clarifications.
