LR Question 21 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Guidelines for constructing new Bonjour Hotels: A hotel…

QUESTION TYPE: Must be True

FACTS:

The following are guidelines for constructing new hotels:

  1. Radiant floor cooling system (“cooling system”) ➞ radiant floor heating system (“heating system”)
  2. Luxury hotel ➞ heating system
  3. Region with high summer humidity ➞ no cooling system

ANALYSIS: We’ve been given some conditional statements. We can also take the contrapositives of them, which would look like this:

  1. No heating system ➞ no cooling system
  2. No heating system ➞ not luxury hotel
  3. Cooling system ➞ not region with high summer humidity

We can use these when assessing the answer choices.

___________

  1. We don’t know anything about what needs to be in hotels that are not newly constructed. We only have guidelines for the ones that are newly constructed.
  2. CORRECT. We’re told that the region has high humidity year-round, which includes the summer. That means that there is no cooling system (Fact 3). We are also told that it is a luxury hotel, so that means there is a heating system (Fact 2).
  3. The hotel not being a luxury hotel tells us nothing. We know what it means if a hotel is a luxury hotel, but can’t infer anything in this case. We also can’t infer anything from the presence of a heating system. We only have rules for what it means if there is no heating system.
  4. This answer choice tries to say that there should not be a heating system. But we don’t know when there should not be a heating system. We only know when there should be one.
  5. The fact that there is very low humidity does not tell us whether there should be a cooling system. We only know that high humidity means there cannot be a cooling system.
