LR Question 10 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Journalist: Contrary to popular opinion, it is more dangerous…

QUESTION TYPE: Strengthen

CONCLUSION: It is more dangerous to drive in the daytime than at night.

REASONING: A recent study found that in the last decade, there were more traffic accidents resulting in death during the day.

ANALYSIS: This argument has a glaring flaw. Of course there are more accidents during the day, because more people are driving during the day.

To strengthen this argument, it helps to give something that shows there’s more to this than just the increased number of drivers. The correct answer choice will either do nothing or weaken our answer.

___________

  1. This strengthens the argument. If most vehicles during the day are unsafe, and most at night are safe, the conclusion is sound.
  2. This successfully strengthens the argument. Reduced enforcement would naturally increase risk of driving, because people would be speeding more.
  3. This tells us that daytime drivers are less cautious than nighttime drivers, which helps us reach our conclusion.
  4. CORRECT. This doesn’t change the argument. It doesn’t matter that passenger quantity increased, because it doesn’t draw a distinction between day and night.
  5. This supports the conclusion, because faster drivers mean the accidents will be more severe.

Recap: The question begins with “Journalist: Contrary to popular opinion, it is more dangerous”. It is a Strengthen question. Learn more about LSAT Strengthen questions in our guide to LSAT Logical Reasoning question types.
