LSAT 17 | Section 2 | Logical Reasoning: Q3

LSAT Preptest 17 explanations

LR Question 3 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: The work of the artist who painted the portrait…

QUESTION TYPE: Strengthen

CONCLUSION: The husband concludes that the wife should not sell the painting.

REASONING: It has sentimental value and should be given to the daughter as a link to her family’s past.

ANALYSIS: We can’t say who is right: it’s a value judgment. Is education more important than the past? Or vice-versa? The correct answer allows us to decide in favor of the husband.

___________

  1. We’re trying to decide whether to sell the painting. The family already owns it. It isn’t being gifted to them.
  2. The husband actually admits that it’s not a very good painting.
  3. CORRECT. Yes. This allows us to make a value judgment between a sentimental link and the cost of college.
  4. We don’t know if anyone promised that they would keep the painting. This doesn’t help us conclude not to sell.
  5. This supports the wife who wants to provide her daughter with an education.

Recap: The question begins with “The work of the artist who painted the portrait”. It is a Strengthen question. Learn how to master LSAT Strengthen questions on the LSAT Logical Reasoning question types page.
