LSAT 101 | Section 4 | Reading Comprehension: Q6

LSAT Preptest 101 explanations

RC Question 6 Explanation

DISCUSSION: James doesn’t follow the conventions of a normal detective novel. All the wrong answers describe something James’ novels do, which means these techniques probably aren’t normally found in detective novels.

These questions are much easier to answer if you keep this basic distinction in mind.

___________

  1. This is true of James’ novels. But she doesn’t write traditional crime novels.
  2. Lines 34-36 show that James used flimsy devices to advance the plot. This implies that most detective novels use more subtle methods to move the plot forward.
  3. Lines 34-37 show that in a good detective novel, we see how a detective solve the crimes. The passage criticizes James’ plotting by pointing out that her detectives seem to use only intuition.
  4. CORRECT. Lines 45-50. Traditional detective fiction neatly assigns blame to a criminal. James spreads it around to several people.
  5. Lines 13-16 show this is something that James does.
