LSAT Preptest 106 explanations

LR Question 5 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: A newly developed light bulb is much more…

QUESTION TYPE: Strengthen – Exception

CONCLUSION: The analyst thinks that the new light bulb won’t sell well.

REASONING: The analyst’s reasoning isn’t given. All we know is that the new light bulb costs three times more but lasts ten times as long.

ANALYSIS: Questions without any supporting reasoning are often easy. You just have to think like a consumer: what would prevent me from buying this new light bulb even though it is more cost-effective?

___________

  1. People don’t care much for long-lasting, ugly light bulbs.
  2. People would be better off with the longer lasting bulb, but they still don’t like the idea of paying more at the start.
  3. True or not, these claims might convince people not to buy the light bulbs.
  4. CORRECT. So? This would mean that people can buy the bulb in whatever quantity they need. That’s usually a good thing.
  5. Maybe people are waiting eagerly for the new bulb before buying replacement light bulbs. I for one am often watching the light bulb market for new developments…(ha)

Recap: The question begins with “A newly developed light bulb is much more”. It is a Strengthen question. Learn how to master LSAT Strengthen questions on the LSAT Logical Reasoning question types page.
