LSAT Preptest 106 explanations

LR Question 7 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: For every 50 dogs that contract a certain disease, one will die…

QUESTION TYPE: Most Helpful to Know

CONCLUSION: It’s a good idea to give dogs this vaccine.

REASONING: 2% of dogs that get infected will die. 0.02% of dogs given the vaccine will die.

ANALYSIS: This sounds like a good idea. But it would be very helpful to know how many dogs will get this disease. If almost no dogs get sick then we will needlessly kill dogs by giving them the vaccine.

On the other hand, if many dogs get sick then it’s a good idea to give them the vaccine.

All of the wrong answers talk about other diseases or other animals. Those things aren’t relevant.

___________

  1. All causes of death don’t matter. We only need to know how many dogs die from this illness.
  2. The conclusion is only about dogs. Other animals are irrelevant.
  3. The conclusion is only about this disease. Other diseases are irrelevant.
  4. Same as C. Other diseases don’t matter.
  5. CORRECT. If dogs aren’t likely to get sick then vaccinating dogs might be more deadly.

Recap: The question begins with “For every 50 dogs that contract a certain disease, one will die”. It is a Paradox question. Learn how to master LSAT Paradox questions on the LSAT Logical Reasoning question types page.
