LSAT Preptest 104 explanations

RC Question 3 Explanation

DISCUSSION: Davis played bebop before 1948. Lines 13-15 tell us about bebop by contrasting it with Davis’ new experiment.

Bebop likely had faster rhythms and more solos.

___________

  1. CORRECT. See lines 13-15. Davis new experiment had slower rhythms and fewer solos than bebop.
  2. Davis’ new work often evenly balanced ensemble and solo playing. Bebop by contrast seems to have emphasized solo playing.
  3. We don’t know what led to bebop. We only know that Davis’ new style was a reaction against bebop.
  4. Tempting. We know that purists often disliked Davis’ new styles. But there might have been 2-3  styles that the critics considered authentic, instead of just one.
  5. We know Davis played in New York for a while. But bebop may have been nationwide.

I got this question right but its making me wonder if RC has different rules regarding logic than LR? Because all it says is that the new style was slower. slow-ER. that doesn’t necessarily mean the old style is fast, and certainly not that it was ‘rapid’. Should I kind of switch the way I think when doing RC to be more flexible? I just feel like if this was on LR it would be a trap answer because the assumption isn’t logical

I wouldn’t necessarily say you have to be flexible in order to reach the conclusion that A is correct. The question asks “The passage SUGGESTS which one of the following …”. Although the passage doesn’t explicitly say bebop had “rapid” tempos, it describes Davis’ group as slowing down tempos compared to bebop, suggesting bebop’s tempos were faster. It is, therefore, a reasonable inference that the passage suggests that bebop had rapid tempos.

Also note that the second half of the answer is even more directly supported. This adds to the overall strength of the answer. The instructions tell you to select the BEST answer, and there is some leeway with both best and suggests. An answer doesn’t have to be perfectly airtight if it is qualified and all the other answers are unsupported. Hope this helps!
