LR Question 21 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: A number of seriously interested amateur astronomers have tested…

QUESTION TYPE: Weaken

CONCLUSION: Amateur astronomers should use the Exodus telescope.

REASONING: The Exodus produced much more detail than the Newtonian telescopes, even though the Newtonian telescopes let in more light.

ANALYSIS: We’re only told that the Exodus produces more detail. But there could be other factors. Price, durability, stability, etc. The argument would have been stronger if it had told us that the Exodus beat the Newtonian telescope on other features as well.

___________

  1. We don’t know if this is true of Exodus telescopes or Newtonian telescopes.
  2. CORRECT. We only know the Exodus is better for image quality. The argument would be stronger if it had made comparisons based on these other aspects as well.
  3. So? That just means this recommendation isn’t relevant to those astronomers. But it might be a good recommendation for people who do want to observe planets.
  4. This shows the telescope’s results are likely reliable and can be reproduced.
  5. That could explain why the Exodus produces better images. But this in no way weakens the argument. Why should we care if the lens is made from another substance?

Recap: The question begins with “A number of seriously interested amateur astronomers have tested”. It is a Weaken question. Learn how to master LSAT Weaken questions on the LSAT Logical Reasoning question types page.
