LR Question 4 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Most small children are flat-footed. This failure of…

QUESTION TYPE: Weaken

TRADITIONAL TREATMENT: Flat footed children have been given special shoes.

REASONING FOR TREATMENT: The shoes are supposed to develop the arch by giving the feet support. There’s no reason given for why this ought to develop an arch.

ANALYSIS: We’re not told why the shoes ought to help, or how effective they are. The correct answer tells us that the shoes aren’t at all effective.

___________

  1. This is just a fact about children. This doesn’t tell us if the shoes help or hurt arch development.
  2. This shows that it’s not good to have unusually high arches. But what does this have to do with special shoes?
  3. This tells us a statistic about flat footedness. But it doesn’t tell us if the special shoes work or not.
  4. CORRECT. This shows that the special shoes have no effect on arch development. Children grow out of flat-footedness at the same rate whether or not they have those shoes.
  5. We’re talking about children who do have flat feet. Children with rotated bones have an unfortunate problem, but they’re irrelevant to the question at hand.

Recap: The question begins with “Most small children are flat-footed This failure of”. It is a Weaken question. Learn more about LSAT Weaken questions in our guide to LSAT Logical Reasoning question types.
