LSAT Preptest 23 explanations

LR Question 13 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Committee member: We should not vote to put at the top…

QUESTION TYPE: Principle

CONCLUSION: We shouldn’t put a drunk in charge of the army.

REASONING: We need leaders who can set a good example.

ANALYSIS: This is probably a good argument, though who knows? Maybe the best candidate, the only one who can win the war, has a drinking problem.

___________

  1. CORRECT. This is the principle behind the committee member’s argument. If you can’t do certain important jobs within an organization, then you shouldn’t get the top job.
  2. The committee member only says that the leader must have been capable of serving at other levels.
  3. The committee member only said the leader needs to have been qualified to hold three jobs: command of a missile wing, bomber squadron and a contingent of fighter jets.
  4. The committee member didn’t say that drunks should be excluded from all lesser positions.
  5. The committee member didn’t say anything about other reasons for not being able to command a missile wing. If someone was incapable for technical reasons, maybe the person would still qualify for top command.

Recap: The question begins with “Committee member: We should not vote to put at the top”. It is a Principle question. Learn how to master LSAT Principle questions on the LSAT Logical Reasoning question types page.
