DISCUSSION: The author seems to be calling the equilibrium model a cult. Since it has acquired a mystique, it’s no longer subject to rational argument.
___________
- CORRECT. The author implies that environmentalists’ belief in the equilibrium model has become a matter of faith and not reason.
- “Empirical scientific research” and “mystique” are usually opposites.
- No, the author is criticizing those who belief in the model. They think interference is “taboo”, a religious term. They are no longer thinking rationally.
- If you just read the end of the sentence in lines 55-56, you’ll see the reformers’ ideas are pretty easy to understand: stop developing, and let wilderness grow.
- The author never mentions what the scientific community thinks of the equilibrium model.

In what lines does the author call it a cult? I can’t find any thing in the passage to defend the use of the word “fevor” :( pls help
Do you mean fervor? It means “intense and passionate feeling”. The lines the question quotes say that interference is now “taboo”. Taboo refers to a social or religious prohibition. That’s effectively a strong feeling and justifies fervor. As does the word mystique, which also refers more to feeling than rationality.
Hope that helps!
