LSAT 23 | Section 4 | Reading Comprehension: Q17

LSAT Preptest 23 explanations

RC Question 17 Explanation

DISCUSSION: Marsh blamed greed in general. He shared industrialists’ belief that nature could be responsibly developed.

But, in lines 20-23 we see that Marsh thought that humanity had wrecked the environment.

Modern environmentalists think that humanity is destroying the world.

So it looks like both groups agree than humanity is destroying the earth. They disagree on what to do about it.

___________

  1. The modern environmentalists probably think that we should regulate industries to the point of conflicting with their self interest. We can only leave wilderness alone by greatly restricting industrial activity.

Though technically, the environmentalists don’t give an opinion on regulating, so we can’t be sure what they think.
  2. The modern environmentalists do think we need a drastic remedy: halting and reversing industrial development.
  3. CORRECT. See lines 20-23 for Marsh and lines 5-8 and 61-64 for modern environmentalists.

They both think humanity is wrecking the environment.
  4. Marsh would agree. The modern environmentalists think that protecting the environment is more important than industry.
  5. This was Marsh’s opinion. Lines 33-35 imply that modern environmentalists do blame specific industries, but we can’t be sure.
