LSAT 23 | Section 4 | Reading Comprehension: Q22

LSAT Preptest 23 explanations

RC Question 22 Explanation

DISCUSSION: Lines 4-7 tell us about the new and the old types of studies.

Old studies focussed on how immigrant groups merged with the national culture to form a single, American identity.

New studies focus on how immigrants transplant their culture to America.

___________

  1. It’s true that current studies focus on “peoplehood”. But older studies focussed on how ethnic identity was not preserved. Multiple foreign identities blended into one national identity.
  2. Lines 57-60 show that current studies have not identified the factors that keep ethnic communities alive.
  3. It was the old studies that examined American national character as a unified whole.
  4. CORRECT. See lines 4-6. The old studies thought immigrant identities were transformed and the immigrants became part of a national American identity.
  5. Lines 4-6 don’t say this. The studies focussed on what immigrants did once they arrived.
