LR Question 20 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Anthropological studies indicate that distinct…

QUESTION TYPE: Weaken – Exception

CONCLUSION: There are no shared values across distinct cultures.

REASONING: Distinct cultures have different moral codes.

ANALYSIS: This is a stupid argument, and hardly needs weakening. Two cultures might disagree on three things, and agree on fifty. So while they have different views, they still have many shared views.

Moral codes can be different and yet have many similarities.

___________

  1. This shows that the anthropological studies (the argument’s evidence) are flawed.
  2. CORRECT. The argument said “as long as there are distinct cultures”. If globalization eliminates distinct cultures, then the author of the argument might agree that we would all share values.
  3. This shows that distinct cultures have similarities as well as differences.
  4. As with A, this shows that the anthropological studies were flawed.
  5. This shows that the anthropologists were deceived by appearances. In reality, we’re quite similar.

Recap: The question begins with “Anthropological studies indicate that distinct”. It is a Weaken question. Learn more about LSAT Weaken questions in our guide to LSAT Logical Reasoning question types.
