LSAT Preptest 101 explanations

LR Question 24 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Ethicist: A society is just when, and…

QUESTION TYPE: Principle

PRINCIPLE: Sufficient and Necessary requirements for a just society:

  1. Equal rights to basic liberty.
  2. No income inequality, unless:
  3. The inequalities help everyone, and
  4. Anyone can get one of the jobs that pays more.

ANALYSIS: There’s not much to say about this. Either you understand what the stimulus says, or you need to read it again and be sure you know it.

There are two possibilities for the right answer. First, the society is just and therefore obeys the four points above. Second, the society is not just and therefore violates at least one of them.

___________

  1. This is very close, but the jobs have to be open to everyone, not just most people.
  2. We’d have to know whether these inequalities benefit everyone.
  3. This doesn’t say if everyone has an equal right to basic liberty.
  4. CORRECT. This violates the first condition. Everyone is supposed to have an equal right to basic liberty.
  5. We’re not told if inequality benefits everyone.
