LR Question 6 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Asthmagon was long considered the most effective of the…

QUESTION TYPE: Weaken

CONCLUSION: We should ban asthmagon as an anti-asthma drug.

REASONING: Even though it’s effective, studies have shown that 20% of people taking it can have serious side effects.

ANALYSIS: We’re not given much detail about the side effects. Does everyone get them? Are they worse than the asthma the drug prevents?

The right answer shows that only people with high cholesterol suffer side effects. So if we prevent them from taking the drug, everything should be fine.

___________

  1. This strengthens the idea that we should ban the drug. It doesn’t seem to have helped: asthma deaths got worse.
  2. It’s hard to see how this is relevant. We have no indication the side effects got better over time.
  3. This is exactly why some doctors want to ban the drug. It’s still being prescribed.
  4. CORRECT. This shows a ban is overkill. We should simply prevent the drug from being prescribed for those with high cholesterol. Other people can still take the drug.
  5. This sounds really bad. The anti-asthma drug makes asthma worse and hurts the heart. We should probably ban this frightening drug.

Recap: The question begins with “Asthmagon was long considered the most effective of the”. It is a Weaken question. Learn more about LSAT Weaken questions in our guide to LSAT Logical Reasoning question types.
