LR Question 1 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Psychiatrist: We are learning that neurochemical imbalances can…

QUESTION TYPE: Identify the Conclusion

CONCLUSION: People will become more compassionate and tolerant towards those who seem strange, thanks to recent studies.

REASONING: Recent studies show that neurochemical imbalances can make us do all kinds of funny things.

ANALYSIS: This isn’t a good argument. People might not learn about the studies. And even if they did, they might still dislike those with neurochemical imbalances.

The conclusion is that people will act differently towards those with neurochemical imbalances, once they hear about the studies.

___________

  1. CORRECT. Once you learn that someone is acting strange because his brain chemicals are off, you’ll feel sorry for him and treat him better.
  2. This is a premise. The conclusion is that we’ll feel sorry for people with imbalances, once we find out what causes their behavior.
  3. The psychiatrist didn’t even say this. There might be other reasons for people’s behavior, apart from neurochemicals.
  4. This is a premise. This fact is the reason people will presumably be nicer to people with neurochemical imbalances.
  5. This is true, but the psychiatrist’s main point is that we will treat people better when we learn the causes of their behavior.
