LR Question 3 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: The manager of a nuclear power plant defended the claim that the…

QUESTION TYPE: Weaken

CONCLUSION: The plant is safer than many other industrial plants where employees could get jobs.

REASONING: The injury rate for current workers at the nuclear power plant is less than half the average for all industrial plants.

ANALYSIS: This is a subtle question. The injury rate is for current workers.

Radiation is a known risk at nuclear power plants. It can make you sick years after you’ve left work. So we should probably also know whether former workers get sick.

___________

  1. This could explain why the plant is safer. Even if employees pay for their own training, they still are safer as a result.
  2. This could explain why the accident rate is low. Problems are easier to fix if management is kept informed.
  3. This strengthens the argument, by showing that radiation isn’t abnormally dangerous.
  4. Lawsuits aren’t really an accurate indicator of safety. But the fewer there are, the more safe the plant is likely to be.
  5. CORRECT. The injury rate was for current workers. This answer choice shows that the true injury rate is higher, because some former workers have injuries that ought to be included when considering the plant’s safety record.
