LR Question 15 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Tony: Few anarchists have ever performed violent…

QUESTION TYPE: Method of Reasoning

CONCLUSION: A high proportion of anarchists are violent.

REASONING: There have never been many anarchists. So even a small number of violent attacks could mean a high proportion of anarchists are violent.

ANALYSIS: Keisha makes a good argument. Anarchists may deserve a reputation for violence, if a high percentage of anarchists are violent.

(e.g. If 75% of anarchists were violent, then it’s fair to say they were violent, even if there were only a few hundred incidents of anarchist violence, compared to thousands of incidents of communist or capitalist violence)

Her method is to add context that shows Tony is not telling the full story.

___________

  1. CORRECT. To decide whether anarchists tend to be violent, we need to know what proportion of anarchists tend to be violent.
  2. Keisha’s evidence doesn’t contradict Tony. It’s still possible that few violent actions were done by anarchists.
  3. Keisha doesn’t disagree with anything Tony says. She just thinks he’s forgetting some essential context.
  4. Tony didn’t compare two groups, and Keisha only mentioned one group: anarchists.
  5. Neither Keisha nor Tony say who should be considered an anarchist.
