LSAT Preptest 104 explanations

LR Question 19 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Pollen and other allergens can cause cells in the…

QUESTION TYPE: Must be True

FACTS:

  1. Antihistamines relieve allergies by blocking histamine. Histamine produces the symptoms of allergies.
  2. Antihistamines also cause sleepiness.
  3. Histamine doesn’t cause cold symptoms.

ANALYSIS: This question tests your ability to understand exactly what a sentence says, and not read anything more into it.

For instance: histamine has nothing to do with colds. Does that mean antihistamines can’t stop colds?

We don’t know…antihistamines might have other effects, apart from blocking histamine.

___________

  1. Who knows? Maybe pollen causes allergies and colds. We’re not told the full effects of pollen.
  2. Maybe there’s a very, very simple way to treat colds, even if antihistamines don’t work. (I wish that were true…colds are miserable. But we have to base our answer on what the stimulus says. It doesn’t deny the possibility of an easy cold cure.)
  3. Tempting, but…we’re not told that antihistamines don’t have other effects. Maybe they block histamine and do other things that help get rid of colds.
  4. This might be true. Antihistamines can make us drowsy. But being drowsy isn’t always enough to put you to sleep.
  5. CORRECT. This has to be true. Antihistamines might stop colds too, somehow. But if they do stop colds, its not because they block histamine. Histamine doesn’t cause cold symptoms.

Recap: The question begins with “Pollen and other allergens can cause cells in the”. It is a Must be True question. Learn how to master LSAT MBT questions on the LSAT Logical Reasoning question types page.
