LSAT 104 | Section 1 | Logical Reasoning: Q7

LSAT Preptest 104 explanations

LR Question 7 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Because of the recent recession in Country A, most…

QUESTION TYPE: Paradox

PARADOX: Magazine ad revenues are down, and the most popular magazines face bankruptcy.

But more people are reading magazines, and there are more financially successful magazines than in the past.

ANALYSIS: LSAT questions often depend on subtle distinctions. There may be a difference between “the most widely read magazines” and magazines in general.

___________

  1. This could explain why revenues are down, but it doesn’t explain why some magazines are doing better than ever.
  2. Who cares about TV? It has nothing to do with why some magazines are failing and why some succeed. There’s no obvious link between TV and magazines.
  3. CORRECT. This explains it. Smaller magazines make money from circulation (readership), and circulation is up. So they’re profitable, even though ad revenues are down.
  4. This explains how people manage to read more magazines, despite hard times. But it doesn’t explain why more magazines are doing well.
  5. “More” is a very vague term. It could mean that 0.002% more magazines survived. And we don’t know how important the general interest magazine market is. This answer choice is meaningless.

Recap: The question begins with “Because of the recent recession in Country A, most”. It is a Paradox question. Learn how to master LSAT Paradox questions on the LSAT Logical Reasoning question types page.
