LSAT 104 | Section 3 | Reading Comprehension: Q11

LSAT Preptest 104 explanations

RC Question 11 Explanation

DISCUSSION: The right answer is difficult because of the word “semantic”. It means “having meaning”.

This question may be easiest to answer by process of elimination. Three of the wrong answers refer to things that happened in the third paragraph. This eliminates A, B and E.

Answer choice C misunderstands the author’s argument about European name theories.

___________

  1. Evidence for the poetry of Hopi names comes in the third paragraph (lines 44-47).
  2. The third paragraph talks about names that describe events. The second paragraph tells us about names that describe characteristics of the Hopi child.
  3. The author never said that European theories are wrong. The problem is that they are limited to describing the function of names in European societies (lines 10-12).
  4. CORRECT. This is tricky, because the word “semantic” is obscure. Semantic means “meaningful”.

This means that Hopi names have content that has meaning.
  5. This is in the third paragraph, lines 30-32.
