LSAT Preptest 106 explanations

LR Question 11 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Sharks have a higher ratio of cartilage mass to body…

QUESTION TYPE: Must Be False

FACTS:

  1. Sharks have a lot of cartilage, more than any other organism.
  2. Sharks resist cancer better than any other organism.
  3. Cartilage resists tumor growth by stopping the development of new blood networks (which tumors require).
  4. Shark cartilage has produced the best results for terminal cancer patients.

ANALYSIS: Since this is a  “must be false” question, the right answer has to contradict one of the four facts above.

The others answers don’t have to be true, with certainty. They just have to not contradict anything.

___________

  1. CORRECT. This can’t be true. We’re told sharks have the greatest resistance to cancer of any organism.
  2. This is possible. It means, for example, that humans have the greatest risk of cancer, and 2% cartilage. This is more cartilage than an earthworm, which has a lower cancer risk.
  3. It could be that most organisms have this substance, but sharks have more of it.
  4. This is possible, as long as shark cartilage has produced the most dramatic improvements.
  5. We only know about cancer risk. Some organisms might be better at fighting diseases than sharks are.
