LR Question 1 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Flavonoids are a common component of almost all…

QUESTION TYPE: Must Be True

FACTS:

  1. All plants have flavonoids.
  2. Apples have flavonoids that are antioxidants.
  3. Antioxidants help prevent heart disease.

ANALYSIS: All we can say is that apples have a type of flavonoid that helps prevent heart disease.

We don’t know how much of an effect antioxidants have, or how many of them you need.

___________

  1. Too strong. We don’t know if other fruits and vegetables help prevent heart disease. And some other foods such as rice, beans, grains, fish, meat, etc. might also help prevent heart disease.
  2. Also too strong. Antioxidants are a factor, but only a factor. And not all flavonoids have antioxidants.
  3. We have no idea how many apples are needed to get the right amount of antioxidants. Maybe you need to eat ten apples to get enough antioxidants to prevent heart disease.
  4. CORRECT. The flavonoids in apples have antioxidants that help prevent heart disease.
  5. We know antioxidants are one factor in preventing heart disease. But they might not be very important at all.
