LR Question 1 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: If you have a large amount of money in the bank…

QUESTION TYPE: Parallel Reasoning

CONCLUSION: If you have a large amount of money in the bank, you are happy. (M ➞ H)

REASONING: If you have a large amount of money, you have great spending power. If your spending power is great, you are happy.
(M ➞ SP ➞ H)

ANALYSIS: This is a good argument. It combines two sufficient-necessary conditions to draw a conclusion.

___________

  1. This would only be a good argument if an expensive house is the same thing as a comfortable life. It isn’t.
  2. This argument incorrectly combines two necessary conditions. We have no idea if there is a relationship between feeling sick and money.
  3. CORRECT. This is a good argument. Swimming excitedly leads to an increased heart rate, which leads to overexcitement.
  4. There could be ways of being physically fit apart from taking a great deal of exercise. Also, it is a reasonable assumption that you are only exhausted directly after having taken a great deal of exercise.
  5. This incorrectly combines two sufficient conditions. Beware answer choices that use the same words as the stimulus.
