LR Question 16 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: It is repeatedly claimed that the dumping of nuclear waste…

QUESTION TYPE: Weaken

CONCLUSION: It must be the case that those responsible for policy are at least slightly worried about the safety of nuclear waste.

REASONING: They have a policy of dumping waste in sparsely populated areas.

ANALYSIS: There could be other reasons for dumping in remote areas, apart from safety concerns. For example, land is usually cheap far from cities rather than in city centers.

___________

  1. This would indicate that there is a safety risk. We’re trying to argue against that.
  2. Same as A.
  3. CORRECT. This provides a non-safety reason why policymakers might still prefer to dump waste in secluded areas. It is less of a headache.
  4. How would this show that nuclear waste is safe? It doesn’t prove anything either way, but if anything it makes us think nuclear waste is unsafe.
  5. We are trying to argue that policymakers do not have any doubt about safety.

Recap: The question begins with “It is repeatedly claimed that the dumping of nuclear waste”. It is a Weaken question. Learn more about LSAT Weaken questions in our guide to LSAT Logical Reasoning question types.
