QUESTION TEXT: Parent: I had tried without success to get my young child to brush…

QUESTION TYPE: Principle – Must be True

FACTS: 

1. The parent couldn’t use imitation or logic to make her child brush her teeth.
2. But she was able to condition the child to brush her teeth in anticipation of her bedtime story. 

ANALYSIS: It’s not enough to say that the child rejected logic and imitation. We must also explain why the child did start brushing her teeth.

1. Setting an example (imitation) failed.
2. CORRECT. After a few weeks the parents created a new habit: If you brush your teeth before bed then you hear a bedtime story after.
   This principle says habit is more effective than other methods.
3. This is tempting because the child didn’t respond to logic. But maybe the parent just had really bad logic? It wasn’t necessarily because the kid was too young.
4. The child did not imitate their parent. 
5. We have no evidence the child was looking for attention. All we know is that they seem to like bedtime stories.
