LSAT 110 | Section 3 | Logical Reasoning: Q12

LSAT Preptest 110 explanations

LR Question 12 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Politician: My opponents argue that the future of our city…

QUESTION TYPE: Complete the Argument

ARGUMENTS: The politician says he will not compromise in order to work together with his opponents. The city’s founding fathers warned against compromising the city’s principles.

The critic points out that the politician is misusing a key term. The logical completion is compromise.

ANALYSIS: In the first sense, compromise means “giving up something to get something you want.” In the second sense it means “betray.” The founding fathers were not warning people against working together. That’s silly.

___________

  1. The use of betray was clear: be a traitor to the city.
  2. Common was clear: That which we share.
  3. CORRECT. Compromise was not clear: The opponents were talking about working together. The leaders accused them of wanting to betray the city.
  4. “Principles” is clear: ideals.
  5. “Opponents” is clear: People you are working against.
