LSAT Preptest 110 explanations

RC Question 24 Explanation

DISCUSSION: The author uses “lynchpin” to mean that being persecuted is the most important factor when deciding whether someone is a refugee.

___________

  1. We have no idea whether countries agree on what persecution is. The passage doesn’t mention this..
  2. We have no idea why the document was created. Was it to protect refugees, or was it for some other, political reason?
  3. As with A, we’re not told what countries think about the word persecution. Maybe they had to be dragged kicking and screaming into agreeing.
  4. We don’t know why people have to leave their homes (they could leave for poverty without being persecuted, for example). We do know they’ll only be accepted as refugees if they are persecuted.
  5. CORRECT. If you’re not persecuted, it’s doubtful that you’ll qualify as a refugee. This question was testing whether you knew what to look for, or whether you would waste time thinking about A-D.
