LSAT 115 | Section 2 | Logical Reasoning: Q19

LSAT Preptest 115 explanations

LR Question 19 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Jeff: Proposed regulations concerning the use of…

QUESTION TYPE: Principle

ANALYSIS: There are three different standards:

  1. The proposed regulation would prohibit research on empathetic animals.
  2. Jeff wants to prohibit research on any mammal, because they can all feel pain.
  3. Miranda wants to prohibit research on any animal, whether or not it can feel pain. She feels such experiments diminish respect for life.

Since we’re trying to support Jeff, the correct answer will relate to pain.

___________

  1. This would support the proposed regulations, but Jeff wants to go further.
  2. That’s silly. A mouse is very different from a horse, and might require different methods. Jeff is simply concerned with whether they can feel pain. It doesn’t matter how we find out they can.
  3. This is tempting, but it’s just a necessary condition for banning experiments. It doesn’t actually tell us that we should ban experiments. “If you banned it, then it must have been an experiment that caused pain,” is all this tells us.
  4. This doesn’t support Jeff. Pain is his main concern.
  5. CORRECT. Yes. This says that if an animal can feel pain, then don’t perform experiments on it.
