LR Question 1 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: With the passage of the new tax reform laws, the annual…

QUESTION TYPE: Weaken

CONCLUSION: Tax reform has helped the poor.

REASONING: The income tax burden on the poor has been reduced $200, from $300 to $100.

ANALYSIS: Any wide ranging reform will have many effects. We’ve been told that one effect is beneficial for the poor. We can weaken the argument by showing that some other effect hurts the poor more than the tax break.

___________

  1. This doesn’t hurt the poor. If any of them use accountants, they’ll save money.
  2. CORRECT. $40 * 12 months = $480. This shows that the poor lose more money in rent than they’ll save in income taxes.
  3. People sometimes vote for politicians who hurt them. We need to find out what the actual impacts of tax reform are.
  4. This helps low-income taxpayers. We want to weaken the argument that the reform helps them.
  5. This also helps low-income taxpayers. It strengthens the argument.
