LR Question 14 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Consumer advocate: Tropical oils are high in saturated fats…

QUESTION TYPE: Point at Issue

Viewpoints: The consumer advocate believes that intensive publicity about the disadvantages of tropical oils is a good thing. They can be replaced by healthier alternatives.

The Nutritionist worries that such a publicity campaign would be harmful. Tropical oils are not a major component of saturated fat in the North American diet. A publicity campaign might convince people that they only had to make minimal changes.

ANALYSIS: The two of them do not disagree that saturated fats are bad, or that tropical oils are bad. Their only explicit point of disagreement is whether or not a publicity campaign against tropical oils is a good idea.

___________

  1. They both seem to agree on this.
  2. They both think publicity campaigns can change habits. It’s just that the nutritionist thinks that tropical oils are not as big of a problem as other sources of saturated fat.
  3. The consumer advocate doesn’t express an opinion on this.
  4. Neither of them say how much healthier people will be if they replace tropical oils with other substances. The consumer advocate only claims that the risk of heart disease will be diminished.
  5. CORRECT. The consumer advocate says yes. The nutritionist says that such a campaign would be counterproductive.

Recap: The question begins with “Consumer advocate: Tropical oils are high in saturated fats”. It is a Point at Issue question. Learn more about LSAT Point at Issue questions in our guide to LSAT Logical Reasoning question types.
