LR Question 16 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Concetta: Frachot was a great writer because she was ahead…

QUESTION TYPE: Method of Reasoning

CONCLUSION: Alicia concludes that Franchot was not a great writer.

REASONING: Alicia says that the mark of a great writer is their skill in writing, not when they spot a trend. Further, Franchot was not ahead of her time in noticing the social consequences of industrialization.

ANALYSIS: Alicia does two things. She disagrees with how Concetta defines a great writer and she also disagrees with Concetta’s factual evidence.

___________

  1. Alicia rejects Concetta’s criterion.
  2. Alicia does discredit Concetta’s evidence. She points out that Franchot was not ahead of her time. Alicia generalizes about what makes a great writer, but she does not base that generalization on new evidence.
  3. CORRECT. Yes. She rejects Concetta’s criterion for what makes a great writer and she also disputes the claim that Franchot was ahead of her time.
  4. Alicia gives no evidence for her claim that a writer should be judged on the quality of her prose.
  5. Alicia does not dispute the structure of Concetta’s argument.
