QUESTION TEXT: Sixty adults were asked to keep a diary of their meals…
QUESTION TYPE: Paradox – Exception
PARADOX: People had more calories at meals where they drank alcohol. 175 calories from non-alcoholic source plus the calories in the alcohol.
ANALYSIS: There are many possible explanations. When you see a question like this, think about it based on your own experience: when do you drink alcohol? I doubt you drink at breakfast, for example. Breakfast usually has fewer calories.
___________
- If you’re eating longer, you have time to eat more.
- This is like my breakfast example above. We eat more at dinner, and that’s when we tend to drink alcohol.
- We tend to drink at meals that are social events, and eat more as well.
- If meals are more attractively prepared and served, presumably we will feel better about eating more of the food. Packaging of a meal may also be an indication of food quality (which causes us to eat more.)
- CORRECT. Without knowing more about carbs, fat and proteins, this doesn’t explain much. Why do those meals have more carbs? And what effect do they have? We would need more info.
