LR Question 2 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Advertisement: The pride that people at Austin Stables…

QUESTION TYPE: Method of Reasoning

CONCLUSION: Barr Motors will produce more winning automobiles than the competition.

REASONING: Barr Motors has a long tradition of pride in their work, much like Austin Stables. And Austin Stables has produced winning racehorses.

ANALYSIS: This is not a rock solid argument, but the technique is simple, persuasive and quite common. Is pride enough to make good cars (or racehorses)? Maybe, maybe not.

The advertisement uses an analogy to try and persuade you that Barr Motors will produce good cars.

___________

  1. Barr Motors has been around for a while, but we’re not given any evidence of repeat customers. They probably have some, but they didn’t mention it.
  2. CORRECT. Yup. An analogy to a relevant situation is a common rhetorical technique.
  3. They haven’t proven it, they’ve just claimed it. Pride is important in their argument, but mainly as part of an analogy.
  4. If anything, they’re overstating the role of pride. I’m guessing Austin Stables needs more than pride to train good horses.
  5. No claim is made on how long each business has been prideful.

Recap: The question begins with “Advertisement: The pride that people at Austin Stables”. It is a Method of Reasoning question. Learn more about LSAT Method of Reasoning questions in our guide to LSAT Logical Reasoning question types.
