LSAT Preptest 119 explanations

LR Question 24 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Biologist: We know the following things about plant X…

QUESTION TYPE: Must be True

FACTS:

Here is a summary of what we know. You can combine each of the statements together, and also the contrapositives:

  1. Thorny Seedpods ➞ Curled Leaves ➞White Flowers or Long Stems ➞ Fuzzy Seeds
  2. Fuzzy Seeds ➞ Long Stems AND White Flowers ➞ Curled Leaves Thorny Seedpods

ANALYSIS: Since the specimen has curled leaves, it must have white flowers and no fuzzy seeds.

It may or may not have thorny seedpods, since they are a sufficient condition for curled leaves. We can only make deductions in the directions of the arrows.

Long stems are not a sufficient condition for anything. All we know is lack of long stems means no fuzzy seeds.

___________

  1. Could be true, because of thorny seedpods.
  2. Same as A.
  3. CORRECT. This is it.
  4. The specimen lacks fuzzy seeds, but it could have thorny seedpods.
  5. Anything with curled leaves needs white flowers.
